MEDITATION 101: TECHNIQUES, BENEFITS, AND A BEGINNER’S HOW-TO

MEDITATION 101: TECHNIQUES, BENEFITS, AND A BEGINNER’S HOW-TO

Meditation is an approach to training the mind, similar to the way that fitness is an approach to training the body. But many meditation techniques exist — so how do you learn how to meditate?
“In Buddhist tradition, the word ‘meditation’ is equivalent to a word like ‘sports’ in the U.S. It’s a family of activities, not a single thing,” University of Wisconsin neuroscience lab director Richard J. Davidson, Ph.D., told The New York Times. And different meditation practices require different mental skills.
It’s extremely difficult for a beginner to sit for hours and think of nothing or have an “empty mind.” We have some tools such as a beginner mediation DVD or a brain sensing headband to help you through this process when you are starting out. In general, the easiest way to begin meditating is by focusing on the breath — an example of one of the most common approaches to meditation: concentration.

CONCENTRATION MEDITATION

Concentration meditation involves focusing on a single point. This could entail following the breath, repeating a single word or mantra, staring at a candle flame, listening to a repetitive gong, or counting beads on a mala. Since focusing the mind is challenging, a beginner might meditate for only a few minutes and then work up to longer durations.
In this form of meditation, you simply refocus your awareness on the chosen object of attention each time you notice your mind wandering. Rather than pursuing random thoughts, you simply let them go. Through this process, your ability to concentrate improves.

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION

Mindfulness meditation encourages the practitioner to observe wandering thoughts as they drift through the mind. The intention is not to get involved with the thoughts or to judge them, but simply to be aware of each mental note as it arises.
Through mindfulness meditation, you can see how your thoughts and feelings tend to move in particular patterns. Over time, you can become more aware of the human tendency to quickly judge an experience as good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant. With practice, an inner balance develops.
In some schools of meditation, students practice a combination of concentration and mindfulness. Many disciplines call for stillness — to a greater or lesser degree, depending on the teacher.

OTHER MEDITATION TECHNIQUES

There are various other meditation techniques. For example, a daily meditation practice among Buddhist monks focuses directly on the cultivation of compassion. This involves envisioning negative events and recasting them in a positive light by transforming them through compassion. There are also moving meditation techniques, such as tai chi, qigong, and walking meditation.

BENEFITS OF MEDITATION

If relaxation is not the goal of meditation, it is often a result. In the 1970s, Herbert Benson, MD, a researcher at Harvard University Medical School, coined the term “relaxation response" after conducting research on people who practiced transcendental meditation. The relaxation response, in Benson’s words, is “an opposite, involuntary response that causes a reduction in the activity of the sympathetic nervous system.”
Since then, studies on the relaxation response have documented the following short-term benefits to the nervous system:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improved blood circulation
  • Lower heart rate
  • Less perspiration
  • Slower respiratory rate
  • Less anxiety
  • Lower blood cortisol levels
  • More feelings of well-being
  • Less stress
  • Deeper relaxation
Contemporary researchers are now exploring whether a consistent meditation practice yields long-term benefits, and noting positive effects on brain and immune function among meditators. Yet it’s worth repeating that the purpose of meditation is not to achieve benefits. To put it as an Eastern philosopher may say, the goal of meditation is no goal. It’s simply to be present.
In Buddhist philosophy, the ultimate benefit of meditation is liberation of the mind from attachment to things it cannot control, such as external circumstances or strong internal emotions. The liberated or “enlightened” practitioner no longer needlessly follows desires or clings to experiences, but instead maintains a calm mind and sense of inner harmony.

Ayodhya Case: 3-member Mediation Panel Submits Report To Supreme Court, Hearing At Friday 2pm

  • Three member panel in Ayodhya mediation has submitted its status report to the Supreme Court in a sealed cover
  • The Top Court-bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi will take up the matter on Friday
In a major development in the Babri Masjid-Ram temple land dispute case, the three-member Ayodhya mediation panel on Thursday submitted its status report to the Supreme Court in a sealed cover, complying to the orders of the apex court earlier on July 11. Following the submission of the report, the Top Court-bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi will take up the matter on Friday at 2 PM.
Earlier on July 31, the Ayodhya mediation panel was allowed to continue talks to reach consensus between Hindu and Muslim sides over the dispute of construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya. After discussions, the panel has submitted the report and based on this report, the SC-bench is set to take up the matter on Friday.
Headed by Justice FM Kalifulla, senior advocate Sriram Panchu and spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, if the mediation panel reaches consent on the Ayodhya dispute, then the mediator's decision may be passed by the top court as the court decree. However, if the members fail to reach a consensus on the matter, the court will be hearing the case continuously after the panel submits its final report. The hearings will continue to take place until unless a verdict is passed.

Three-member mediation panel

The Supreme Court March 8, 2019, had appointed a three-member panel to mediate in the Ayodhya title suit case. The panel-led by retired Supreme Court justice Fakkir Kalifulla and also comprises Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and Sri Ram Panchu. The media was also barred from reporting on the mediation process in order to maintain confidentiality. Also, the panel was directed by SC to submit the report within eight weeks, the deadline of which culminated on May 3. The panel held its first sitting in March in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh.
Announcing the mediation, Justice Bobde has that "outcome of mediation is not something the court considers. He said that a matrimonial dispute that has been referred to for mediation might end up in divorce or might end up in reconciliation.

Day-to-day proceedings in the matter

On July 11, a five-judge Constitution bench, headed by CJI had said that a day-to-day hearing will take place in the matter if the court decides to conclude the mediation proceedings.

Fighter Prithvi will come out of doping setback stronger: Childhood coach

Fighter Prithvi will come out of doping setback stronger: Childhood coach

prithvi Shaw is a "fighter" and will come out of his eight-month doping suspension stronger, says Santosh Pingutkar, who taught him the ABC of cricket long before he became his most famous ward.
The BCCI on Tuesday banned the talented 19-year-old opener from all forms of cricket for failing a dope test.
A release from the Board said Shaw had "inadvertently ingested a prohibited substance, which can be commonly found in cough syrups".
He childhood coach Pingutkar called it a setback.
"He (Prithvi) is a fighter and will definitely come out of it. He has worked hard (to reach the top)," said Pingutkar, who first imparted lessons to a young Shaw at Virar, a suburb around 60 kilometers from Mumbai.
It was under Pingutkar that Shaw, who had led India to U-19 World Cup victory in New Zealand and also made a hundred on Test debut against West Indies, learned the basics of the game.
Shaw's father Pankaj had taken him to the coach, who runs an academy.
"Definitely the setback is huge, but I have the confidence that he (Shaw) will come out of it," added Pingutkar.
Shaw's suspension is retrospective in nature, starting from March 16 and ending on November 15, which rules him out for India's home series against South Africa and Bangladesh.
Senior columnist Makranad Waingankar, who has played a formidable role in shaping Prithvi's career, said that there was nothing to worry and everyone makes mistakes in life.
"Cough syrups are dangerous. Prithvi Shaw should have known it because all players are given the list of Do's & Don'ts by BCCI's anti-doping committee. He will come out of it. Everyone makes a mistake. Nothing to worry," tweeted Waingankar, who was also a cricket administrator.

Tax Rise For High Earners May Trigger Fund Flight, Says Ex-RBI Governor

"In theory if tax rates are very high, obviously people look for other countries," Mr Jalan said.

NEW DELHI:
A former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor, Bimal Jalan, has warned that the higher income taxes the government introduced in its budget could lead to a flight of funds from the country.
"In theory if tax rates are very high, obviously people look for other countries, which have lower interest rates, and also exemptions from income tax," said Mr Jalan, 77, who chairing a central bank panel deciding on how much of the RBI's reserves should be transferred to the government.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in her budget this month, raised taxes on people earning more than Rs. 1 crore a year to at least 42.7 per cent. That included foreign portfolio investors registered as trusts.
Analysts and traders say this has been a major reason for foreign investors being net sellers of more than Rs. 3,000 crore of funds from Indian equity markets in July, after they invested more than Rs. 10,000 crore in June.
That has helped to send India's BSE index tumbling more than 4 per cent to 37,686.37 since July 1.
Parliament passed the budget last week.
